Bias Tape Tutorial

biastape.jpg
  1. (Picture 1) Ensure you cut the strips of fabric to the correct length. (For 1/4" cut 1/2", 1/2" cut 1", 3/4" cut 1 3/8", 1" cut 1 7/8", 2" cut 3 7/8".) Cut the fabric on the bias for hem finishing. Cut the fabric on the vertical or horizontal for handicrafts.
  2. (Picture 2) Feed your piece of tape through the bias maker. Pin the end of the tape to the very end of your ironing board. This way you have the whole length of the board to work with.
  3. (Picture 3) As you pull the tape maker keep the iron about 1" from the end of the tape maker. If your iron is too far away the tape will spread too widely. If you are too close the tape will crinkle and fold underneath the iron. I found that having the iron on the hottest setting with full steam gave the best results.
  4. (Pictures 4,5 &6) Take a business card or a piece of card and begin to wind the tape around the card. Once all the tape is collected around the card pin the end in place.
  5. (Picture 7) Your neat little strips of bias tape will stay tidy and ready to use.
